Take control of
your Sperm

The most effective way for a man to preserve his fertility so he can try to have children in the future is through sperm freezing. Sperm banking can also be done for the purpose of being used for a different patient's treatment.

You may want to consider freezing your sperm if:

1- You either have a medical issue or are undergoing treatment for one that could impact your fertility.
2- You want sperm available in case you decide against having (more) children after your vasectomy.
3- You either have a low sperm count or declining sperm quality.

If there are any excess embryos of notable quality that have not yet been transplanted during your IVF treatment cycle, they can be frozen as a stand-alone procedure for fertility preservation. All frozen embryos are preserved on-site at our facility in accordance with HFEA rules. Andrologists (experts in sperm and male fertility) evaluate and process the semen once it is in the lab and get it ready for storage. In tiny vials filled with a particular freezing solution, andrologists deposit ready sperm. The vials are placed in freezers that contain liquid nitrogen for storage. A small amount of the sample is examined under a microscope after the sperm has been separated from the seminal fluid or testicular tissue.

Sperm
Freezing Process

01

Consultation and Preparation

The first step is getting checked for any infectious disorders, such as HIV and hepatitis. This does not affect whether you can freeze your sperm or not; rather, it ensures that contaminated sperm samples are kept apart from other samples to avoid cross-contamination. Then, you must express your written, fully informed agreement to the storage of your sperm and state how long you want it to be kept.

02

Producing a sample

If you decide to visit a fertility center or sperm bank, you'll probably need to fill out some paperwork first. Then, in a secluded collecting room, you'll ejaculate while being manually stimulated to create your sample (masturbation).

03

Processing and analyzing sperm

Prior to being "washed" with sterile media, sperm is first measured to determine the volume of semen once it has been received by the lab. To separate the sperm from the seminal fluid and transport medium, the sample is next centrifuged (spun). Through this procedure, the lab staff can use a powerful microscope to only see the sperm.

04

Post-thaw analysis

A crucial stage in sperm freezing and preservation is this quality test. In the post-thaw analysis, a small piece of your sample is frozen and then thawed to mimic the thawing circumstances your sperm will encounter when it is ready to be used. The sperm in your sample is then re-analyzed using sperm quality parameters to determine whether it will still be viable after thawing.

05

Cryopreservation and storage

Using liquid nitrogen, sperm is frozen. In cryogenic vials, sperm are first gently combined with a cryoprotectant, which sucks water out of the sperm cell to prevent harm after freezing. They are then submerged in liquid nitrogen and quickly frozen at -196°C or below. In order to preserve their low temperature for long-term sperm preservation, the sperm vials are finally moved to liquid nitrogen storage tanks.

Frequently
Asked Questions

We are not aware of any concerns associated with using frozen sperm for patients or children, thus it is extremely safe. However, not every sperm will endure the freezing and thawing procedure.

Treatments employing frozen sperm are equally effective as those using fresh sperm.

Before beginning treatment, you must fill out consent paperwork stating how you want your sperm to be used. Before a treatment or before the sperm is used in research or training, you have the option to change or withdraw your consent at any moment. Your sperm will not be used if this occurs.

You'll need to undergo fertility therapy, which may include intrauterine insemination (IUI), in vitro fertilization (IVF), or intracytoplasmic sperm injection if the sperm you are utilizing is of subpar quality (ICSI). Your sperm will be utilized exactly the same way as fresh sperm once it has thawed.
